That was the project
Chemnitz has all sorts – its good points and its problems. But what we cannot live with is hate, violence, intolerance and, above all, looking the other way. That’s what allows the enemies of democracy to flourish. It’s frightening. But as citizens we now need to let our fear give us courage.
We have to face the truth. We have to ̈stay honest. And we need careful, mindful media for this. In recent years, what used to be a grey, industrial city has been transformed into the colourful and vibrant place we know as Chemnitz, thanks to the efforts of many active and motivated people. It has also become something of a comfort zone. But we have to step out of that zone now. We must and will mobilise, re‑engage, to stop all of our vibrant colours turning into the kind of brown the brownshirts used to wear. We need to turn discrimination into respect; blindness into enlightenment; division into solidarity.
Above all, we want to show that the majority of people in our city are democratic and openminded. This is the responsibility of each and every one of us. Thank you to everyone who is helping us rekindle the spirit of peaceful coexistence.
